ADDITIONAL INFORMATION | ||||
Our curriculum could could be reasonably described in three parts: the Common Core; the major; Humanities and Social Sciences. Chronologically, students first take courses in a common core program, providing a foundation in Mathematics (typically 2 years of math through Linear Algebra and Differential Equations and Statistics), a computer science course, a writing intensive humanities course (which double counts towards the humanities and social sciences requirement), three terms of Physics, a full year of General Chemistry, Biology, and a systems Engineering class. Students musdt complete a minimum of 12 courses in Humanities and Social Sciences (H/SS), of which 5 must be taken at HMC, the others may be taken at neighboring colleges in Claremont or through study abroad. There is a distribution requirement in H/SS, as well as a concentration requirement whcih involves completing at least four courses in one particualr area of inquiry (a mini-minor). Each major includes a healthy mixture of required and elective courses, covers both theoretical and applied areas of study, and each studnet must complete a capstone experience in the major by writing a thesis or completing one of our celebrated Clinic programs. At least one course must be an integrated course that looks at how science affects society or vice versa.
